On The Road, by Jack Kerouac

A friend sent this quote to me today...

"The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes "Awww!"

It's taken from a book called "On The Road" written by Jack Kerouac in 1951 and published in 1957. It's an autobiographical novel and one I must now read, not only because I instantly and completely fell head over heels in love with the quote and it's author but because when the book was originally released, The New York Times hailed it as "the most beautifully executed, the clearest and the most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as 'beat,' and whose principal avatar he is." Not to mention that in 1998, the Modern Library gave "On the Road" 55th place on the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century list. Also, the novel was picked by Time magazine as one of the 100 best (English) novels from 1923 to 2005.

The quote is simply spectacular, touched my soul and as a book worm, part of a family of book worms with a brother "Stuart Meczes" who is an author - I'm wondering how the hell I managed to live this long without knowing about this quote or book.
